What Exactly Is Niche Marketing?

Posted By Tim Dodd On 31/03/2009 @ 10:00 am In Niche, Internet Marketing | No Comments

Niche marketing involves optimizing your access to small markets.  You identify a market with a specific need, supply a product or service that meets that need, and communicate your ability to meet their need.

Identifying a Niche Market
A niche market is a specialty market.  Identifying one takes some creativity and research.  One way to identify a niche is to think of a product, and then to think of the people who might want that product but not be able to get it or use it. You can do this with almost anything.

For instance, think of socks.  Who might have problems using socks?  People with no feet, or people who can’t pull them on.  Right there, you’ve identified two niche markets.

Or say you provide a particular service.  Who might have problems accessing your service?  When you’ve answered that question, you’ve identified a niche market.

Another way to identify a niche market is to use a keyword tool, such as the one at Google Adsense.  This helps you identify words that people search for when they are looking for information or products.

Providing a Product or Service
Once you’ve identified a niche market, you need to provide a product or service that they need.  In the sock example above, you might sell adaptive appliances to help people put their socks on.  In the service example, you might develop a way for people to access your service.

Once you’ve identified the keywords you want to target, consider what products or services would meet a specialized need related to those keywords.

Communicating
Communicating is advertising.  Advertising looks differently in the internet business world than it does in the brick and mortar world, though.  Keywords are an important factor in internet advertising.

Your niche market is trying to find you, and they use keywords to do it.  You have to figure out what keywords they will use, and set your website up so that they will find it.  You do that by tags and content.

For instance, say you’ve decided to sell an adaptive appliance for pulling on socks.  You might set up a website named [1] www.sockshop.com.  It could have a headline that says, “We help you pull up your socks” and you would have content on your website that included the keywords “socks” “help” and “pull up.”

When a prospective client put any of those words into a search engine, your website would come up.

In niche marketing, you aren’t going after huge numbers of people.  You are targeting a small, specialized market.  You want to make sure you hit your target with the right product, and that your target can find you on the internet.
